| Rehabilitation of the upper limb post stroke: an east west integrated approach |
Evaluation and management of autonomic dysfunction |
This symposium will address a broad range of topics of interest to the rehabilitation professional, who is faced with the challenging task of rehabilitating the stroke upper limb. These range from applying the current evidence to clinical practice of rehabilitation through a pragmatic approach, a functional approach to managing post stroke upper limb spasticity and a novel approach to using medical acupuncture in the treatment of common stroke-related complications. Both theoretical and practical aspects will be presented.
|
Autonomic dysfunction manifested in various clinical features in patients with central and peripheral neurological disorders is not uncommonly encountered in rehabilitation settings. This workshop will provide information on the clinical manifestation and diagnosis of common autonomic problems. Demonstration on laboratory evaluations including using Nerve Conduction Studies for diagnosis will also be provided. Management of these common autonomic problems will be delivered.

| EMG (Basic) (Chinese) |
Andrew Fischer Memorial: Spinal Segmental Sensitization and Segmental Neuromyotherapy |
EMG is an extension of clinical examination, and plays important role in diagnosis and prognosis of neuromuscular diseases. It is essential in rehabilitation medicine. In this workshop, basic concepts in electrodiagnostic medicine including basic anatomy and physiology of the neuromuscular system, membrane physiology and volume conduction as well as the safety considerations in electro-diagnostic medicine will be introduced, followed by the introduction to needle electromyography, nerve conduction and evoked potentials study. Hands-on practice with nerve conduction studies of major peripheral nerves of the upper and lower extremities will be performed. In addition, some clinical applications of electro-diagnostic medicine in rehabilitation will also be discussed. The first is the differentiation and significant of different waves will be discussed. The second is the ordinary use of electrodiagnosis in rehabilitation medicine. The third is examples of peripheral nerve disease, central nerve system abnormity in rehabilitation treatment. Classic stimulation diagnosis is still useful for routine treatment. It is easy for use and can make quantitative evaluation for peripheral nerve lesion. The course will also introduce, analyze and review the use of different classical diagnosis in peripheral nerve rehabilitation. |
In this conference, the concept of Spinal segmental sensitization (SSS) and the neurosegmental neuromyotherapy method will be introduced in treating various conditions with emphasis on myofascial pain syndrome, osteoarthritis, and post stroke spasticity. This will be presented in the form of a seminar and two workshops and followed by a question and answer session.
Seminar: Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Spinal Segmental Sensitization Approach
The seminar will focus on the discussion of trigger points, the use of SSS as a framework in evaluating clinical manifestations of trigger points and the application of segmental neuromyotherapy on the diagnosis and management of pain caused by myofascial trigger points.
Workshop 1:
Improving Function and Quality of Life in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis Using the Spinal Segmental Sensitization Model: A Hands-On Approach
This workshop is designed to provide the participants with direct hands on experience in the practice of office physiatric procedures using paraspinous nerve blocks and trigger point injection techniques to relieve pain, improve function, and quality of life in patients with severe knee osteoarthritis. The physiological effects of the local and central effects of needling and injection will be discussed.
Workshop 2:
Improving Function and Quality of Life in Stroke Survivors: A Spinal Segmental Sensitization Approach
This workshop is designed to provide the participants with direct hands on experience in the practice of office physiatric procedures using paraspinous nerve blocks, trigger point injection, botulinum toxin injection techniques to improve function and quality of life in stroke survivors. The local and central effects of needling will be discussed.

| Cardiac Rehabilitation workshop: How to establish a cardiac rehabilitation program? (in Chinese /English) |
Dementia and Rehabilitation Management |
Cardiac rehabilitation is evidenced to be effective through intensive research. It is cost-effective in terms of reduction of mortality and morbidities, improvement of Quality of Life and reduction of long-term cost for patients with coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. However, there is still a big gap between the benefits and setting up the practice in some countries because of various reasons. This workshop targets at facilitating physicians and therapists on how to organize a cardiac rehabilitation program through experience and practice in various countries. Prof. Kavanagh has been a pioneer of cardiac rehabilitation in Canada since 1960. His experience is valuable to the starter for the cardiac rehabilitation program. Dr. Guo will talk about her experience on how to set up a cardiac centre and how to attract patients keeping on therapy in Mainland China. Dr. Leonard S.W. Li will talk about the exercise prescription.? A discussion forum for logistics on setting up a cardiac rehabilitation program will assist the participants to discuss difficulties in their own settings.
|
The workshop will start with a brief overview of dementia and current concepts related to aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Delirium and other associated conditions will be also considered. The speakers will present reviews of rehabilitation and dementia in the context of stroke, hip fracture and other common rehabilitation clinical groupings. Case studies from several countries and cultures will be presented to illustrate common clinical problems encountered in rehabilitation when dementia is present. To conclude there will be a discussion on the development of a specific service for rehabilitation of dementia as a component of rehabilitation services.

| Severe Brain Injury Care in Europe |
EMG (Advanced) (English) |
The burden of the problem, experience , guidelines , results and perspectives in Europe and in Italy .
The aim is to present the European vision on these problems , very quickly growing in our Countries (not only traumatic ) and requesting a really complex rehabilitation interventions; to present some experiences in research and managements, and the particular italian experiences and model for evalutation and net-work interventions on this field.
Keywords are :
- Global evalutation (as ICF says ) and global continuous care for
the person and for the family,
- PRM centered Guidelines for defining evidence based interventions
both in acute phases and post-acute, up to home rehabilitation,
- Reseach for qualify interventions, on technologies and drugs to
reduce disabilities and support Participation
- Continuous involvement of Patients and Families Associations to
qualify scientific and management decisions. |

Assessment of Non-Organicity in Claimed TBI: Controversies, Caveats and Conundrums. |
Further information is coming soon!
|
This workshop will examine the myriad of clinical conditions that may present in an atypical fashion and serve as a basis for confusion regarding the organic basis of subjective patient complaints and/or unusual clinical exam findings in cases of claimed brain injury following trauma. Attendees will develop an understanding of the nomenclature germane to matters such as malingering, somatoform disorders including conversion disorder, dissimulation and simulation behavior, as well as, factitious disorders. Specific exam techniques will be reviewed in the context of assessment of non-organic impairments including exam techniques, validated cognitive and psychoemotional tests, as well as, uncommonly used procedures such as drug assisted interviews, polygraph testing and hypnosis. The differentiation of atypical organic and/or non-organic conditions from organic ones following claimed brain injury is challenging at best. As a general rule, physicians and clinicians do not receive any formal training on this aspect of patient diagnosis and management. This workshop will examine the differential diagnosis of cognitive, behavioral and physical impairments following claimed brain injury that may be misdiagnosed and/or misinterpreted as neurological in origin and consequential to TBI when in fact they may be trauma related but not due to brain injury and/or non-trauma related.
